Longshot Map

Longshot gets its name from the long shot that the ski patrol must throw when doing avalanche control. This wide couloir is also known as Upper Paradise. Access from the upper left side of Finger Ridge, which separates Bruce's Bowl from Paradise. Experts can enter high at the first opening in the trees to tackle the steep upper face, also the target for the ski patrol's long throw mentioned above. Below this first face, a short rock band dissects the fall line just as the trees tighten up. Watch for rocks here. Below this constriction the slope opens nicely to a wide, shallow couloir and then eventually to an open face. The lower opening in the trees is also a great spot to enter for a nice fall line run of nearly 800 vertical feet. Enjoy this open face that feels steep, but doable for advanced skiers and riders. Watch for the traverse track entering from the right at the elevation of Gate 4. Some of these skiers are headed to Paradise Trees, and this annoying track can ruin an otherwise perfect run. Below this traverse the tracks are usually much denser. If you happen to be there when the ski patrol drops the ropes at Gate 3, head to Longshot for a consistent fall line in deep snow. Thanks to prevailing the winds, this run, especially the top and along the trees to the right, gets loaded. Note that once through the Northway gates, cliffs and other hazards are not marked. This is avalanche prone terrain. Ski/ride with a partner and carry the proper equipment.

Steep skiing at 38-45 degrees. This requires very good technique and the risk of falling has serious consequences.
