This 7-mile out-and-back trail is great for anyone looking for some fun scrambling and good views off the beaten path in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness Area.

Description

The first few miles start off along the Box Creek valley floor on the Rachel Lake trail. Just after the obvious avalanche path, a faint trail turns off right and goes directly upward to the summit of Hibox Mountain. The trail is very steep and can be lost fairly easily if you are not paying attention. Even before the summit, there are some very steep sections that require caution.

When you reach the summit block, the easiest way to the top is to follow the scree around right to the notch on the ridge. Then scramble (class 3) up the ridge on some exposed but good rock until you reach the summit. For those looking for some extra fun, there are many other possible scrambles (class 4+) up the summit block of increasing difficulty the more leftward (Westward) you start.

If you go before July, expect some snowfields to remain in steep terrain near the top. An ice axe and traction devices will significantly increase security in these sections in early season.
