A little bit of Canada comes to the French Alps. Exciting tree skiing best done on big powder days.
Freeride Skiing Difficult
So named for the snow covered ‘mushroom’ rocks that are common in Canada, the Bugaboos area can be confusing, with lots of narrow shoots, cliff bands, flat sections and holes to fall into. But if you get your line right it can be awesome! From the top of the Casse du Boeuf chairlift, follow the Bois red piste. When it turns left around the trees, keep going straight on. Take care as there is a cliff directly ahead that gets bigger the further right you go. Pass the cliff to its left then bear right along a flat section which can be slow going if your track is the first in deep snow. There are various lines to the left but pick your entry carefully as some are very technical and committed with big jumps and narrow landing areas. The most straightforward line is at the end of the flat section to the left, from where you rejoin the Marteau sauvage. There is an almost endless number of variants once in the Bugaboos. All end up on the Marteau blue piste. Watch out for the one big cliff near the bottom in the middle. Staying left of it will lead you into a fun couloir while staying right will take you through a variety of tree runs.
