It's not often that you can quickly walk all the way around the 3rd largest island in an EU country, but the circumnavigation of Comino presents such an opportunity. The island is right in the middle of the Gozo Channel and offers great views of both Malta and Gozo.

Description

The best way to get to Comino is to take one of the regular ferries from Mgarr on Gozo or Cirkewwa on Malta. Comino is a popular tourist destination and there are regular ferries there from both of the larger islands.

The ferries drop you off at Comino's best known attraction - the stunning Blue Lagoon. A shallow body of perfect turquoise water, the Blue Lagoon is busy throughout the summer but if you come in shoulder season, you stand a chance of getting it quiet. Whether it's busy or not, taking a dip in the Blue Lagoon is never a bad idea so bring your swimming stuff on this hike.

Leave the Blue Lagoon behind and begin the clockwise trip around the island by strolling over to the Comino Hotel. This used to be an exclusive tourist resort but closed and fell into disrepair. The hotel has since been bought and rumours abound that it will be reopened in the near future.

Carry on clockwise to the wonderful St Marija Bay and then cut into Comino's interior and make the short trip onto its highest point. The detour to the "summit" of Comino is only short and is clearly visible on our line here.

Continue south down to the abandoned Comino Pig Farm, which still feels eerily lived-in; there are documents strewn across the floors of the buildings, and it feels like the pigs have only just left! In reality they left in 2011 having originally been introduced to Comino in order to rebuild Malta's pig population, which was decimated by the African Swine Flu outbreak in the 1970s.

From the farm, head close to Comino's south coast and enjoy the wonderful views across to Malta. Swing around to the north and go along the spectacular cliff tops above Crystal Bay before dropping down to Crystal Lagoon (the waters of which are as beautifully clear as the name suggests) and on to the Blue Lagoon.

Have another dip and then jump on a ferry!
