Helvellyn via the Keppel Cove ZigZags Map

Leave Glenridding and head uphill on the lane that leads to Greenside road and climbs to the Youth Hostel. A wide stone track heading alongside the Beck is rideable for some and a push for others, before the track turns and zigzags steeply up on loose rock. It is easiest to carry your bike on your back for this section, which fortunately doesn't last overly long. A short descent to a plateau gives some respite, before another steep carry up Lower Man and around and onto Helvellyn. Admire the great views in all directions, happy in the knowledge that it's (almost) all downhill from here! Retrace your route for the return journey. Take care on the steep ridge descent of Lower Man which is fast, loose and technical and has severe consequences if you fall. The wide Keppel Cove Zig Zags make a fast, loose and fun descent, just watch out for walkers as this is a popular way up Helvellyn for them too. Once on the wide stony track enjoy the stupidly fast rocky descent back towards the Youth Hostel and the whizz down the track and road to Glenridding. A great ride.
