Trail Running Difficult
Popular among mountain bikers, the Amasa Back riding area has quickly become an incredible opportunity for trail runners to explore Moab's iconic terrain. With close proximity to town, classic sandstone formations, and views of the Colorado river, trail runners have endless opportunity to shorten, lengthen, or otherwise variate off this outer loop depending on ability.
Frequently run clockwise, the loop begins with a short stretch of road before spiraling onto Lower Captain Ahab Trail. A mountain biking classic, the trail meanders around the southern borders of the riding area before following sandstone ledge northwest to the Amasa Back 4x4 Trail. Open to vehicles, this rugged, remote trail is only visited by fully-equipped 4x4 vehicles and offers an extremely challenging path for mountain bikers. That said, trail runners should be able to navigate the terrain with ease.
The return portion is arguably the best as the trail follows a narrow slickrock bench above the Colorado River. utahmountainbiking.com considers Jackson Trail to be "hairy technical riding", as it follows high consequence lines back to the trailhead. As with the rest of the route, look for blazes painted on rocks to help keep you on track.
