Mountain Biking Difficult, Severe
If you don’t utilize the lift system, mountain biking in Chamonix basically consists of grunting up an ultra-steep climb straight up the mountainside and then bombing straight back down a singletrack trail. It’s no surprise that electric mountain bikes have grown to be so prevalent in Chamonix. In fact, the mountain bike scene in the Chamonix Valley has reached the point where it’s much less common to see a traditional acoustic mountain bike in town or on the trails than it is to see an electric mountain bike with a motorized boost built in.
The routes in this guidebook have all been constructed with ebikes in mind. Each of these loops consists of a rideable ascent up the mountain and a ripping descent back down. Almost all of the climbs, in fact, take place on dirt roads. The one exception is the inclusion of the Petit Balcon Loop, but this classic loop is a must-do for any type of mountain biker, hiker, or trail runner… so of course it’s included here.
