Kleinmachnow Loop Map

Kleinmachnow is a small town in between Potsdam and Berlin with a very rich history, and pretty architecture and scenery. In the 1900s, it was a tiny manor village before it grew into an affluent commuter town in the early 20th century, with the impressive Neo-Romanesque Hakeburg Castle constructed at that time. After suffering extensive damage and population losses in the First and Second World Wars, it became a border town and part of East Germany, until the reunification on 3rd October 1990. Much of the original buildings remain, including an old mill and village church. Kleinmachnow is also located on the Teltow Canal, and its surrounded by lakes, woodland, and many parks, making it the perfect base for a countryside ramble.

Description

Begin the hike at the Kleinmachnow lock. Head west along the Teltow Canal, passing under the motorway bridge in the direction of Dreilinden. Turn left at Stolper Weg, go through a patch of forest, and then you will come to a wide stretch of meadow, the former no man's land surrounding the border between east and west. Cross over the former motorway of the West Berlin side, turning right at the junction before going over the Teerofendamm to the "Checkpoint Bravo" area, which was the border crossing point. Head along the Albert-Einstein-Ring to Stahnsdorfer Damm until you get back to your starting point, the old lock.
