The first half of this long day is very enjoyable mountain terrain, with some lovely skiing. Leaving the hut it is a steady climb N to the Passo di Nefelgiu at 2583m. It is a great ski down the far side, facing NE, down a gully. We went down to about 2170m. The Swiss map marks a line traversing out to the R a little higher, passing to the S of spot height 2300m, but this didn’t look in good condition.

From here it was a gently rising traverse to get onto the shoulder above spot height 2214m, which allows a lovely descent NE and E down to the road at about 1700m. The steep hillside opposite has a zig zag track up it, cutting the corners as you wish, leading to the Maria Louisa Hut. The reservoir beyond is most easily taken on the L, leading to the Swiss border at the Passo San Giacomo. A lovely N facing ski down, easily initially, then steeper in trees leads you to the hamlet of All’Acqua, where you may choose to finish your excellent day.

If you feel the need for lots more energy-sapping shuffling then continue down the valley, as best you can, to the town of Airolo. Most opt for the bus!
