Freeride Skiing Severe
Cotton Fields is a steep open backcountry glade with some short chutes and gullies. This run is for experts. Start by entering Gate A, ski one of the many lines in the upper bowl, but stay left before it flattens out. Otherwise you will end up in the Valley of the Cliffs, the long cliff band that runs from S-Bend Chutes to Cotton Fields. If you plan to explore this cliff band, do so only on good snow years. Bring a 150' rope.
Cotton Fields starts on the far skiers left of the ridge above Valley of the Cliffs. This is a broad area that covers all the terrain from the cliff band to Goat Chutes. In general the upper field is gladed with small trees. Find any number of lines through these trees. Watch for rollers and chutes as the slope steepens along the same elevation as the cliffs to your right. The upper section contains some small gullies. Skiers left of these gullies the trees are a bit thicker, but here you can find a more straightforward line. The trees thin out as the slope rolls over to its steepest angle. Skiers right and below the upper gullies mentioned above offers the most open slope. Otherwise the timber gets thicker below this steep face. Follow the gradient to the creek bed at the bottom of this valley. Follow this north until it intersects with the summer trail, which heads south. Follow this to the Northway parking lot where you have hopefully stashed a shuttle car. Otherwise walk up to the Boulevard and hitch a ride back to the Base Area. This is backcountry terrain and is outside of the ski area boundary. This slope avalanches regularly. Ski/ride with a partner and always carry the proper equipment.
