Description

As the capital of Arkansas, Little Rock is dotted with city parks, urban trails, state parks, and even doubles as an eastern access point to the epic Quachita National Recreation Trail(https://fatmap.com/routeid/2727202/OuachitaNationalRecreationTrail. An important highway interchange for those heading from east to west, or vice versa, many travelers simply pass through town, not expecting much in the way of trail running opportunities near a major city. Well, that’s definitely not the case in Little Rock, and if you cross paths with a local, chances are they’ll recommend one of these 5 classic runs near town. From a family-friendly neighborhood park, to the longer Arkansas River Trail, this guidebook breaks down some of the best places to trail run near downtown Little Rock.

If you’re staying in town, visiting a friend, or perhaps just looking for a relaxing jog before or after work, then head over to Allsopp Park. The north and south loops mapped here tour most of the trails within the park, and several access points from nearby neighborhoods make it popular with the locals. The park includes a playground, numerous sporting fields, tennis courts, group pavilions, picnic tables, and much more. Some of these amenities are wheelchair accessible, plus restrooms and drinking water are available for all. Even if you’re new to trail running, the easy, mellow terrain makes it a great option for getting started.

If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of town and earn some of the best views in the area, then make your way to Pinnacle Mountain State Park, a 20-minute drive from downtown. While hiking the West Summit Trail leads to an impressive view, this run tour links the Base and Kingfisher Trails for a more runnable and relaxing tour of the State Park. A 5-miler at nearby Rattlesnake Ridge is another excellent option that earns equally stunning views just minutes down the road.

Other classic runs near town include the longer Arkansas River Trail and Boyle Park. As with Allsopp, Boyle is a popular city park with full amenities, and the Grilled Loop is a staple 3.5-mile loop popular with mountain bikers, hikers, and trail runners alike. In contrast, the Arkansas River Trail follows paved pathways through town, then links a few sidewalks and side streets to form a scenic loop around Little Rock. Countless access points make it one of the most popular spots to enjoy a long run in the area, and the trail is part of a greater 88-mile network of multi-use paths that work their way west of town. While paved, it’s a great option to change things up, plus restrooms and drinking water stations are placed at regular intervals throughout the trail.
