Huemul Circuit Trek Map

If you are looking for a challenging and rewarding trek in Patagonia, the Huemul Circuit might be the perfect choice for you. This 40+ mile loop trail takes you on a four-day adventure through some of the most stunning and diverse landscapes in the region. You will hike along rivers and glaciers, over mountain passes and moraines, and beside lakes and icebergs. You will also get to see the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, the second largest ice field in the world, from a unique perspective that no other trek in El Chalten can offer.

Description

The Huemul Circuit is not for the faint of heart. It is mostly unmarked, with technical terrain, steep ascents and descents, and two river crossings that might require zip lines and harnesses. You will need to carry all your camping gear, food and water, and be prepared for unpredictable weather and strong winds. You will also need to register and pay a fee at the ranger station before starting the trek.

The trek starts and ends in El Chalten, a small town that is known as the trekking capital of Argentina. You can reach El Chalten by bus or car from El Calafate, which has an airport with flights from Buenos Aires and other cities. You can find accommodation, restaurants, shops, and gear rental in El Chalten.

The Huemul Circuit is divided into four sections:

  • Day 1: El Chalten to Laguna Toro (10 miles)
  • Day 2: Laguna Toro to Refugio Paso del Viento (9.3 miles)
  • Day 3: Refugio Paso del Viento to Camp Bahia Tempanos (8.7 miles)
  • Day 4: Camp Bahia Tempanos to El Chalten (12 miles)

Each day offers different challenges and rewards, but also incredible views and experiences that you will never forget. The Huemul Circuit is one of Patagonia's best-kept secrets and a must-do for adventurous hikers.
