At Bormio 3000 you enter a moonscape, which is simultaneously very eerie and very beautiful. Right at the top, all to be seen is loose shards of rock and surrounding dalmatian patterned mountain tops with white patches of snow and dark brownish, almost black mountains.
Follow the S541 to Laghi di Profi. These are clusters of intensely blue bodies of water. There are around 12 in total ranging from a little more than puddle size to a biggish lake. Crossing over a couple of streams you will come to a signpost where you need to take the trail directing you to ‘Lago delle Tre Mote’ and ‘Lago Stelu’ which are also high altitude lakes surrounded by amazing mountain vistas.
Turn back the way you came until the crossroads at the Laghi di Profi. From here descend down the S542 following signposts for ‘Bormio 2000’ through green pastures, across ski slopes and a red spruce forest, until emerging at Bormio 2000, where you can take the lift down or try this hike back down to Bormio: Bormio 2000 – Monti di Sobretta – Bormio
Difficult
