Day 5: Traverse of Kranzberg, 3666m, followed by ascent to the Hollandia Hut, 3235m
Ski Touring Severe
It is a long gentle glacial skin to the Hollandia Hut if going direct from the Konkordia hut. This is an option for tired legs or bad weather. Much more enjoyable is to take in Kranzberg on the way.
Cross the Konkordiaplatz to the foot of the peak. Steep initially it soon eases to an easy angle for skinning up SE then E facing slopes, to pass to the L of a spur at 3400m, then up S facing slopes to a final ridge and short bootpack to the summit at 3666m. Descent is to the S, down steepish slopes, which put you onto the Grosser Aletschfirn, before a few km of easy skinning to the Hollandia Hut at 3235m.
Severe
Steep skiing at 38-45 degrees. This requires very good technique and the risk of falling has serious consequences.
