Boer Mountain is an absolute paradise for mountain bikers!
Mountain Biking Easy, Moderate, Difficult, Severe
If you're driving north through British Columbia on Highway 16, the Boer Mountain Trail System in Burns Lake is absolutely a must-ride. But if you haven't heard of it before, you could easily drive right past and miss this fantastic gem of a mountain bike trail system. Consider yourself informed.
Boer Mountain possesses all of the secret ingredients to make it a miniature mountain bike mecca. On this small mountainside, you'll find a smorgasbord of professionally built mountain bike trails constructed to IMBA standards. Many of the most popular trails in the system are jump-filled flow trails built by the renowned Gravity Logic trail crew from Whistler.
But don't expect this to just be a jump fest. You'll also find rocky, gnarly downhill runs, all mountain-style tracks that mostly descend but have a few tough climbs sprinkled in. Around the base, cross-country trails roll up and down in the mellower terrain, and you can even pedal hot laps on shorter tracks in a small bike park.
There are two different options for reaching the big descents on Boer Mountain:
At the time of this writing, in Summer 2022, the climbing trail—known as Huff 'n' Puff—is still under construction. About two-thirds of the trail has already been completed and is open for use, and the rest should be done soon. Being able to pedal up a grade-conscious singletrack trail is so much better than grinding up a steep road grade, but the real treat is being able to pick your poison—pedal or shuttle, as you prefer.
If it was just about the singletrack, many places could compete with Boer Mountain. But a true mountain bike destination must offer so much more, and you'll find that "more" here at Boer. Encircling the main trailhead parking lot is a campground with beautiful sites featuring fire rings, picnic tables, and plenty of outhouses, and best of all—it's free to camp.
While you won't find any running water, just a few steps from the campground is Kager Lake. This small gem of a lake is tucked in the heart of the trail system, with the only "development" on this isolated beauty being a small wooden dock and a wooden viewing platform. After a long, hot ride, there's nothing better than jumping off the dock into the refreshing lake water and then unwinding with a cold beverage as you take in the rugged beauty of the northwoods all around you.
Stellar riding right from your campsite, a private non-motorized swimming lake, and more singletrack options than you can shake a stick at—do you need anything else in life?!
