HIKE DETAILS Total distance is approx. 14km with 1,200m of altitude.

Description

BEGIN AT LA PRAZ (Although this hike is also popular from Chamonix). Start in the village of La Praz which can be reached by the Mont Blanc Express Train or Chamonix Bus.

Follow the main road toward the mountain over the train tracks. Take a left turn and walk along the river to the head of the trail.

Follow the trail to the Grand Hotel du Montenvers and Montenvers Observation Deck (this is well marked) from there you can continue to walk down to the Grotte De Glace or take the cable car.

There is a cafe and reatsurant at the top of this hike and you can easily spend 2-4 hours here checking out the Grotte de Glace, snacking, seeing the various small museums and the glaciorium, all while enjoying the stunning views.

GROTTE DE GLACE There is a little cable car that takes you down the first section of the descent to the Grotto De Glace, or you can stroll down the path. At the bottom of . the cable car you must take the 415 steps to reach the ice cave (these stairs increase as the glacier continues to recede).

HEAD INTO CHAMONIX We decided to head into Chamonix after this hike. This is also a very popular route and is clearly marked. If you do this walk down, I HIGHLY recommend stopping for lunch at the little cafe on the way (the sign outside literally says, paradise is found here) and they are well known for their cakes, mmmm. If you are feeling tired you can purchase tickets at the Montenvers Observation Deck and take the iconic Montenvers train back down.
