A mellow powder field that leads into a spicy choke and steep chute
Freeride Skiing Severe
Currently, Comma Chute is considered a permanently closed area at Snowbird but it has been open in the past and there are always rumors of it opening again. It begins with a great open powder field skiers right of Gun Towers and above the Comma Chute cliff band. Once you hit the rope line that is over the cliff band, traverse skiers left until the rope ends and find your entrance into the chute. The entrances are all difficult and vary in steepness and technicality depending on the snowpack. There is absolutely NO easy way into comma chute. If you are up for the challenge of the entrance, you will be rewarded with steep and consistent powder through a perfectly sized chute. Comma Chute can also be accessed from Alta through the Gun Tower gate.
Severe
Steep skiing at 38-45 degrees. This requires very good technique and the risk of falling has serious consequences.
