Bowl Map

Twin gullies that funnel through a narrow chute into Hamburger Basin, the Bowl is for experts only. Even though the Bowl is part of Hamburger Basin, it is only accessible when Southback is open. Enter the upper Southback gate at the summit of the Throne and work the ridge past Summit Chute Right to a narrow opening in the trees. It is possible to drop into the top by jumping off the summit cliff onto the slope below. Alternately look for the opening above the next tree island that separates the Bowl from Alex's Funnel. Ski cut across the upper slope before committing, as this slope does not get much skier compaction. Bowl Right offers a more straightforward entrance, but a more challenging lower section, where the trees tighten up and the slope steepens. Bowl Proper below the steep cliff offers a more forgiving lower section. It is possible to enter on the right and veer to the left, connecting these two sections. Watch for the traverse track below the chutes as you enter the wide open Hamburger Basin.
