The Slot Couloir Map

The Slot Couloir is one of if not the most popular ski tour within the Alpental Valley and it is easy to understand why. Its features are aesthetically pleasing not to mention that because it is north facing it holds great snow. I used to have a joke that I wanted to hang out up top giving numbered tickets to everyone who arrived “Serving number 13….number 13 you can drop in now”. That being said I love this line and the blessing is that the approach is somewhat challenging making it semi hard to get to. So since we got that out of the way it is time to talk about the dangers. Not only is the Slot Couloir known for Slabs but many people would say the approach is even more dangerous. The fear isn’t so much as getting buried in an avalanche but getting swept into trees. Always be cautious in the mountains but be especially cautious when heading for this line.

Description

Starting at the Alpental Parking lot make your way onto the Snow Lake Summer trail. Once you pass the open avalanche swath and head into the woods it is time to start gaining elevation. The forest starts out really steep but as you gain elevation it starts to mellow out a bit. After a little less than 2,000 feet of climbing the trees start to thin out. Because this area is near a major pass winds from the East can load the slopes turning it into a slab nightmare so proceed up the rest incredibly cautiously. About 100 feet below the Summit of Snoqualmie Mountain there is a small notch to access the Northern slopes, this is the entrance to the Slot Couloir.

Dropping into the slot couloir play it safe with a staggered descent. Make sure that your group has a plan with the first person dropping in and riding over to a safe spot before your partner drops in. A person at a time make your way down to the lower apron and when it is time to transition make sure to traverse to a safe spot.

When it comes to ascending never climb back up the Slot Couloir as both you and the people above have no idea of each other. The safe way to go is heading South to the ridge just below the rock bands. Once there it is time for some of the best tree riding in Washington state. Start traversing hard skiers left and once near the massive avalanche swaths start riding fall line. Being near the valley floor you should hit the bottom of your skin track and do a hard traverse skiers left, with a little bit of luck you will make it back to the car park.
