If it snows hard in Sölden, the heaviest snowfall will be on the glacier. The weather on the glacier during snowfall is extreme and is usually followed by strong wind. In these conditions the glacier is closed for tourists. The positive aspect of this happening is that the glacier can be closed for some days during winter season and after this you can find some untracked lines. However, in order to get the tracks you need to be quick. Next to the slopes on the right side of the gondolas Schwarze Schneide 1 & 2 you can find some fresh powder after a good snowfall but it does get tracked pretty quickly. On top of Schwarze Schneide 2, the first thing you'll need to do is stay on slope 32 until you pass the big ridge on the right side. Then just continue on the right side of the slope but don't ride too far on the right side, because of the danger of crevasses. While going up on the gondolas, check out the big crevasse in the middle of the Rettenbachglacier face, at the beginning of the steeper part. The off-piste is wide open and without cliffs, because there is only the glacier under the big layer of snow. Along schwarze Schneid 2 the off-piste is not steep and even beginners could ride it. Next to schwarze Schneide 1 the terrain is steeper and more challenging and fun. The slope next to the off-piste is also steep because on this slope the FIS Slalom race happens every year in autumn. Don't expect to get nice powder runs if the last snowfall was a few days ago.
