Numerous south facing gullies within the Tamokdalen Valley
Ski Touring Difficult
The Kitchen Chutes are a series of south facing gullies that descend over 600 meters to the lower valley, and 1000 meters back to the road. Starting from the Tamokdalen Valley road this route navigates on the lookers left side of Lemmetelva Creek before making its way up a relatively mellow col of Lemmetfjellet. Once on the upper slopes you find yourself on flats heading southwest before finding the entrance to chutes.
While this route would be great in stable powder conditions it really shines for late season corn skiing. Both climbing and descending are relatively straightforward and can be lapped numerous times while only using one ascent route. It is a great afternoon run as the later light glows on the slopes with a stunning view of surrounding mountains.
Climbing-wise it is recommended to have crampons but can be done by just skinning alone. Heading around the chutes you have a clear view of them to check out the lines before making your way up. When we went out there we considered doing a few laps so decided to bootpack up as it would be easy and fast to retrace our steps. Once on top we had a clear view all the way down so there was no question that we were at the right spot.
If it is a sunny day and you want to make the most out of the daylight this is a great option for nice steep corn turns with 3 main chutes to choose from.
