Description

Salt Lake City has the special quality of being a metropolitan city with a small-town feel. Perhaps that feeling comes from it being totally surrounded by nature, with so many possibilities to get outdoors easily. The city is full of glistening lakes, encircled by mountains, and frequently blessed with bluebird skies. In winter, Salt Lake is the springboard for some of America’s best ski resorts, and all year round the city attracts hikers with its variety of landscapes and terrain. Five stunning national parks lie within easy reach of the city, including Bryce Canyon National Park with its red spiral-shaped hoodoos set against pink cliffs, and Arches National Park, the famous red-rock wonderland.

While reaching the national parks doesn't require days of driving, you don't need to road trip that far to find beautiful hikes. Indeed, the 10 routes in this guidebook show off the great variety of hiking opportunities close to Salt Lake City. For a classic route through aspen groves and open alpine, go for Gobblers Knob. Those wanting a tough climb with a magnificent panoramic summit should try Lambs Canyon to Millvue Peak.
